Modern Epidemic

A messenger was tasked
to warn the populace
of the epidemic
of terrorism.

He succeeded.
People were afraid.
The plague spread.

This poem was written in response to Messenger, prompt 261, at Sunday Scribblings and Epidemic, prompt 162, at One Single Impression.

I've written some longer narrative poems so far this month; it felt good to write short, lyric poems again.

An epidemic of fear can be a good thing or a bad thing. If only we didn't need the epidemic at all.

  8. Fear is polarizing, sometimes deadly, but always disrupting in our world. The Bush administration actually lifted a lot from the blueprint of another tyrant (funny how Glenn Beck accuses Pres. Obama of being like Hitler, but the agenda started in 2001).

It's an Orange Day. BE AFRAID! Remember that?

Great stuff, Mr. W. Teach it!

Amy - and food for thought:

  9. What a frightening poem of our times. We cannot hide or run from life but only wish that it happens in the next street over.

  11. jaerose, unseen is a good word for it, but it's not unfelt, which is the problem I think.
Amanda, it is sad and true, and we do need change.
teric, I think we could all do without epidemics.
Amy, I agree, fear is polarizing, and the way our politicians have used it and continue to use to justify unseemly means and ends is shameful. Yes, the Homeland Security color system that kept us fearful, and the fear of Weapons of Mass Destruction that led to the Iraq War.
oldegg, it's not like the Home Front of WWII, is it?
The Write Girl, thank you. I was surprised how those two words inspired such a powerful poem.

  12. I am more worried by our own politicians than foreign terrorists. Georgie Porgie and Tony B Liar - two of the worlds worst terrorists, and we VOTED for them.

  14. Old Altonian, I couldn't agree more. It's not apparent from the poem, but you got who I was talking about. I had George Porgie specifically in mind.
Sweetest in the Gale, thank you for your kind words. It does spread, and that is scary in itself.
